ESCO - European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations

ESCO is an initiative of the European Commission in order to support and complement initiatives developed by the European Commission aiming at making labour market and education systems more transparent, stimulating mobility and creating opportunities.

It is multilingual classification of European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations. It identifies and categorises skills and competences, qualifications and occupations relevant for the EU labour market and education and training, in 22 European languages. The system provides occupational profiles showing the relationships between occupations, skills, competences and qualifications. ESCO is developed in an open IT format and is available for everyone to use free of charge.

The overall approach has been based on learning outcomes and intends to use learning outcomes in order to match citizens abilities associated with their formal qualifications but also the abilities they gained through non- and informal learning with the requirements of occupations and jobs on the labour market.
